Yes, we really tried to avoid Michael Jackson news, so we'll keep this short and sweet -- unlike the plethora of dirt being dug up about everyone who cam within 100 yards of the guy.

That means we're skipping the story from the U.K.'s Sun that says MJ was gay and had an "insatiable" desire for sex with half-Asian men and said things like "the King of Pop is going to lick your lollipop," according to biographer Ian Halperin. Because he's just trying to sell and book and we have some standards, you know.

Meanwhile, the New York Post says that Debbie Rowe has given up parental rights to her kids to Katherine Jackson. The price? Oh, only $4 million. Hey, that's $2 mil apiece for Prince Michael, 12, and Paris, 11.

"It's one final payday," a friend of the family said. "They felt is was like a ransom-type thing. (Rowe) jumped back into the picture because she wanted money."

Rowe had forfeited rights back after the kids were born, allowing MJ to raise them for $8 million, plus five annual payments of $900,000. She also popped up in 2001, when Jacko was accused of molestation, but gave up rights again for $4 million more and a $900,000 home.

At least those kids won't be exploited just for money anymore. Unless the Post's report that Joe Jackson wants to combine them with Prince Michael II to form The Jackson 3 is true, that is. Wow, those kids are in soooo much trouble.

The Foreign Secretary says the Twitter profile bearing his name is a fake, but several websites reported his comments about Michael Jackson’s death.

The fake tweet, which came from a Twitter user calling himself “David_Miliband”, read: “Never has one soared so high and yet dived so low. RIP Michael.”

The comment was picked up by several media organisations, forcing the Foreign Office to issue its own tweet clarifying the situation. “David Miliband does NOT have a Twitter account,” read the message from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

However, Mr Miliband has now paid tribute to Michael Jackson online, through his official channel. “The death of Michael Jackson is very sad news for his family, friends and fans,” he writes on the Foreign Office website.

“My thoughts are with his family at this time. But the instant Twitter put out in my name last night was not me.”

The fake David Miliband has almost 2,000 followers, and offers tongue-in-cheek comments about the latest events. In one, he even apologies for the lack of recent tweets: “Sorry for absence, as you can understand between Iran and domestic troubles it’s been more than a little hectic!”

Other political leaders have also issued official statements marking the death of Michael Jackson. Gordon Brown, the prime minister, said his thoughts were with Jackson’s family and three young children. “This is very sad news for the millions of Michael Jackson fans in Britain and around the world,” he said.

David Cameron, leader of the Conservative party, said that despite controversies surrounding his life, Michael Jackson would be remembered as a “legendary entertainer”.

“I know Michael Jackson’s fans in Britain and around the world will be sad today,” he said. “Everybody will be thinking of his family, especially his children, at this time.”

New world's tallest man stands at a towering 8ft 5ins

He has spent years shrinking away from the limelight and at school his nickname was 'titch' because he was so tiny.

But Ukrainian Leonid Stadnyk has now officially become the world's tallest man standing at a towering 8ft 5ins in tall.

Measuring an impressive 8ins taller than the previous record holder, Mongolia's Bao Xishun, it has long been suspected that Stadnyk should hold the official title of the world's tallest man.

But until now the 37-year-old former veterinarian has always refused to be officially measured for the Guinness Book of Records as he hates his height and didn't want to be famous.

The towering giant who lives in Podoliantsi, a tiny village in Ukraine has called his height 'God's biggest punishment for me' and refuses to look in the mirror.

His extraordinary growth spurt started at the age of 14 after surgery on a benign brain tumour stimulated his pituitary gland, which is responsible for generating the hormones that boost growth.

Previously at school, the Ukrainian was one of the smallest boys in his class and he used to be known to fellow pupils as 'titch'.

But his condition known as acromegalic gigantism, saw him grow so fast that suit trousers which once fitted him perfectly were 12 inches too short within two years.

He now sleeps on two beds joined together lengthwise, weighs nearly 32 stone, and has 17-inch feet. His gargantuan palms measure more than a foot in diameter.

Despite persistent attempts by the Guinness Book of Records to officially measure him over the last three years, Stadnyk had always refused until he met London growth expert, Professor Michael Besser.

On examination, the specialist found to his surprise that the brain tumour which had haunted Stadnyk for more than 20 years had naturally died off - saving Stadnyk's life and finally halting his extraordinary growth spurt.

It was Professor Besser's discovery - filmed for a documentary on the Discovery Channel in December last year- that led to the emergence of his true height after it was measured officially in Kiev.

Now he has been added to the record books in America, although the 2008 Guinness Book of Records won't be published in the UK until September 28 this year.

The former veterinarian, now lives with his mother in a cramped three-room, one-storey house in northwestern Ukraine where he has to contort his frame to get in the doorway.

Stadnyk spends his days taking care of the family's house, cows and pigs, gardening and looking after a tiny pet parakeet.

Although he was once able to work on a cattle farm, he had to quit six years ago after his feet became frostbitten because he couldn't able afford to buy a pair of specially made size 27 shoes which cost £98 - the equivalent of seven months' worth of his pension- for his gigantic feet.

Professor Besser, from the London Clinic Centre for Endocrinology said: "He doesn't want to be famous. He lives like a hermit and he says he has done nothing to court fame and wants nothing to do with the Guinness Book of Records.

The former record holder was Mongolian Bao Xishun who was measured at 7 ft 8.95 in on January 15 2005 at Chifeng City Hospital, Inner Mongolia, China.

The UK's tallest man is Neil Fingleton, who was measured at 7ft 7.56ins at the Guinness World Records offices on January 29 2007.

The tallest ever man was American Robert Pershing Wadlow, who was born in Alton, Illinois on 22 February 1918 and was last measured at 8ft 11.1in tall on 27 June 1940.

Last summer Sony Ericsson launched a new line of Bluetooth(INFO) equipped watches. The new MBW-150 lineup includes the Music Edition, the Classic Edition, and the Executive Edition. The three watches all include the same controls and functionality, but have different wrist bands and color schemes.

Recently Sony Ericsson sent us one of the Music Edition MBW-150 watches to test out. But first, one might ask, what does a Bluetooth watch do? A number of things, as it turns out. The watch will provide caller ID information for inbound calls, it will notify the user when a new message arrives on the paired up phone, and it will even alert the wearer if they leave their phone behind unintentionally. On top of that, it can also be used to control a phone's music player, offering start/stop, volume control, and previous and next track navigation. While the watch generates no sound at all, it has a built-in silent vibration alarm that it uses to get your attention.

The MBW-150 ME weighs about 86g (3.0oz), has a black band made of a rubber material, and features orange accents on the face of the watch. It measures 15mm in thickness, which is not all that bad when you consider that my normal Festina watch is 12mm thick. In fact, that highlights one of the best aspects of the new MBW-150 watches: they feel and appear to be normal watches, especially the Classic and Executive editions.

Each watch has a regular analog aspect to it that uses traditional hands and has a knob on the right hand side for setting the time. On top of that, there are a pair of control buttons that straddle that knob on the right side, and a set of 3 buttons for music control that adorn the left hand edge of the watch. A small OLED(INFO) display runs across the bottom of the watch face and is used for music track info, caller ID, and the menu.

The lower right hand button navigates through the list of options that control the Bluetooth power state, the messaging notification service, the "you forgot your phone" notice option, and the pairing mode for linking up the watch with a phone. The top button toggles or activates the currently displayed option. When not in the menu, the top button will bring up the date and battery status screen, as well as a digital view of the time. The music buttons are pretty straight forward. A quick press on the top or bottom button changes volume, while long presses move to the next or previous track. Music playback is started with a long press of the middle button, and paused with a short press of the same button.

Trimble Nomad rugged handheld gets Android Cupcake

If you’re looking for a mobile device running Android off the shelf, you’re not actually limited to HTC’s two smartphones. SDG Systems have announced that their Trimble Nomad rugged mobile computing system is now available with Android OS 1.5 Cupcake pre-installed.

First announced as a Windows Mobile device with wireless data connectivity back in March 2008, the Trimble Nomad is based on an 806MHz processor with standard Bluetooth 2.0, WiFi and GPS. It has a VGA-resolution touchscreen display, up to 2GB of storage and meets the MILSTD-810F military standard for drops, vibration, humidity, altitude and extreme temperatures.

What’s optional, however, is the Trimble’s cellular connectivity: quadband GSM with EDGE data. That’s actually yet to get Cupcake support, as is the camera and Bluetooth module. The Trimble Nomad, complete with Android OS 1.5 Cupcake, starts at $1,274.

The Nokia N800 Internet Tablet is a wireless Internet appliance from Nokia, originally announced at the Las Vegas CES 2007 Summit in January 2007. Despite Nokia's strong association with cellular products, the N800 is not a phone, but instead allows the user to browse the Internet and communicate using Wi-Fi networks or with mobile phone via Bluetooth. The N800 was developed as the successor to the Nokia 770. It includes FM and Internet radio, an RSS news reader, image viewer and a media player for audio and video files.

Note that the USB port uses a mini-B socket instead of mini-AB so that a specially grounded adaptor is required to make full use of the USB OTG client/host auto-switching. Switching can be done in software with regular adaptors, though. USB OTG only provides 100 mA of power (versus full-size USB's 500 mA), so devices with larger power requirements will need to be used with a powered USB hub.

Main article: Maemo (operating system)

The N800, like all Nokia Internet Tablets, runs Maemo, which is similar to many handheld operating systems, and provides a "Home" screen—the central point from which all applications and settings are accessed. The Home screen is divided into areas for launching applications, a menu bar, and a large customisable area that can display information such as an RSS reader, Internet radio player, and Google search box for example. Maemo is a modified version of Debian GNU/Linux.

The N800 is bundled with several applications including the Mozilla-based MicroB browser, Macromedia Flash, Gizmo, and Skype.

Improved taskbar and full-screen previews

The taskbar at the bottom of your screen is what you use to launch programs and switch between them when they're open. In Windows 7 you can pin any program to the taskbar so it’s always just a click away, and you can rearrange the icons on the taskbar just by clicking and dragging. We’ve made the icons considerably bigger, too, so they’re easier to use. Hover over the icons and you’ll see thumbnails of every file or window that open in that program, and if you hover over the thumbnail, you’ll see a full-screen preview of that window. Move the cursor off the thumbnail and the full-screen preview disappears.

Jump Lists

With Windows 7, we focused on keeping the things you use most right in front of you. One example: The new Jump List feature. It's a handy way to quickly reach the files you've been working with. To see the files you've used recently, just right click on the icon on your taskbar. So right-clicking on the Word icon will show your most recent Word documents. Plus, if there are other files you want to keep handy, you can just pin them to the Jump List so they’ll always appear. That way, the documents you’re likely to want are just a couple clicks away.

Some programs, such as Windows Media Player, can pre-populate their Jump Lists with common tasks. For example, on the Jump List for Windows Media Player, you’ll see options to Play All Music or resume your last playlist. On the Jump List for Internet Explorer, you’ll see frequently and recently viewed websites. With some programs, you’ll even have quick access to tasks that, in the past, were only available from within the program, such as composing a new e-mail message.

Desktop enhancements

Windows 7 simplifies how you work with the windows on your desktop. You'll have more intuitive ways to open, close, resize, and arrange them.

With Windows 7, it’s easier to do things you do all of the time. For example, before, when you wanted to compare two open windows, you had to manually resize your open windows to show them side by side. With Snaps, you can simply grab a window and pull it to either side edge of the screen to fill half the screen. Snap windows to both sides, and it’s easier than ever to compare those windows.

Another thing you may want to do is quickly see your gadgets or grab a file from your desktop. To see your desktop just move your mouse to the lower right corner of your desktop. That'll make all the open Windows transparent—so your desktop is immediately visible. Want to get all but one window out of your way? Grab the top of that window, shake it and all the other open windows will minimize to the taskbar. Shake the window again, and they’ll all come back.

Looking for something on your PC? What’s your first instinct? If you use the web a lot, you probably start by looking around for a search box. Now, you can find things on your computer the same way. Introduced with Windows Vista, Windows Search helps you find virtually anything on your PC quickly and easily. Windows 7 also makes search results more relevant and easier to understand.

Looking for a file, e-mail, or application? While you can easily look through folders and menus, there’s an even faster way. Just click on the Start button and you’ll see a search box at the bottom of the Start menu. Just enter a word or few letters in the name or file you want, and you’ll get an organized list of results.

Windows 7 uses libraries to show all content of a particular type in one spot. Say you’ve got photos in several locations on your PC. A lot will be in your Photos folder. But you might have some in documents folders too. Your photos library makes it easy for you to browse and use all your photos, no matter where they are on your PC.

By collecting things into a single view, libraries make it simpler to find what you’re looking for. They’re even more powerful with Windows Search. You can search your Libraries using filters to customize your search. For example, when you’re looking for music you can search by album. Or search for photos by the date they were taken. You can go to your Documents Library, click on authors, and see all the documents on your computer sorted by author name.

A new technology in Windows 7 called Device Stage takes device management a step further. Device Stage helps you interact with any compatible device connected to your computer. From Device Stage you can see device status and run common tasks from a single window. There are even pictures of the devices which makes it really easy to see what's there. Device manufacturers can customize Device Stage. For example, if your camera manufacturer offers a custom version of Device Stage, then when you plug your camera into your PC, you could see things like the number of photos on your camera and links to helpful information.

Today, you may have a network in your home that you use to share an internet connection. But it can be hard to share other things, like files and printers. Do you have one or more computers in your home but only one printer? If you’re like most people, when you need to print a file that’s on your laptop in your bedroom on the printer in your den, you probably e-mail the file from one PC to another or transfer it on a USB drive. And if you need to find a file but don’t know which computer it’s stored on, chances are you’re in for a long night as you traipse from PC to PC and search each one.

HomeGroup, a new feature in Windows 7, makes connecting the computers in your home a painless process. HomeGroup is set up automatically when you add the first PC running Windows 7 to your home network. Adding more PCs running Windows 7 to the HomeGroup is an easy process. You can specify exactly what you want to share from each PC with all the PCs in the HomeGroup. Then, sharing files across the various PCs in your home—and many other devices—is as easy as if all your data were on a single hard drive. So you can store digital photos on a computer in your den and easily access them from a laptop anywhere in your home. Similarly, once in a HomeGroup, the printer in your den is shared automatically with all of the PCs in your home.

Enter LG KP500 - pitched as the most affordable touch phone

Aiming at the midrange market, LG will be bringing full touch handsets to the masses, by introducing their latest LG KP500. Standing at 11.9 mm of thickness, the LG KP500 may be affordable but not at the expense of style.

Borrowing its design from the LG Renoir, the LG KP500 uses the latest reincarnation of the proprietary LG Flash-based UI. The user interface is thumb-optimized, but a stylus is also provided to assist handwriting recognition. Unlike the LG Viewty however, the stylus here is tucked into the body of the handset itself.

The LG KP500 is not a high-end device, but once again it's feature pack is optimized for affordability. The KP500 doesn't have 3G support, but there's quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE for a true world-wide use.

It also has a 3 megapixel fixed focus camera, but there's a 3-inch wide touch screen display with a resolution of 240 x 400 pixels to poke around. A microSD memory card slot, stereo Bluetooth, FM radio and an accelerometer for auto screen rotation and gaming completes the tally. A virtual landscape QWERTY keyboard and office document viewer are also present.

I would have loved to have been at this year's Kitchen/Bath Industry Show, especially since household appliances are becoming more "tech-hip". Among the many companies showcasing their products is LG Electronics, with its next generation LG TV Refrigerator line. LG already sells refrigerators with TVs in them, but now you can receive personalized weather reports in real time, dubbed WeatherPlus. The WeatherPlus display features other important information, such as a calendar with an alarm, 100 pre-loaded recipes, and a personal digital photo album.

The other side of the fridge sports a 15-inch standard definition, cable-ready LCD TV with DVD connection and FM radio.

The features don't end there. The LG TV Refrigerator also includes: the IcePlus system, which can make ice faster; OptiFresh crispier, which keeps produce fresher longer; and the BioShield anti-bacterial gasket that prevents mold and mildew from forming on the door seal.

The LG TV Refrigerator, model LSC27990TT, will be available in the second quarter of 2006 in a titanium finish at a retail price ranging from $3,499 to $3,699.

History of TFT LCD

Liquid crystal was discovered by the Austrian botanist Fredreich Rheinizer in 1888. "Liquid crystal" is neither solid nor liquid (an example is soapy water).

In the mid-1960s, scientists showed that liquid crystals when stimulated by an external electrical charge could change the properties of light passing through the crystals.

The early prototypes (late 1960s) were too unstable for mass production. But all of that changed when a British researcher proposed a stable, liquid crystal material (biphenyl).

Today's color LCD TVs and LCD Monitors have a sandwich-like structure (see figure below).

What is TFT LCD?

TFT LCD (Thin Film Transistor Liquid Crystal Display) has a sandwich-like structure with liquid crystal filled between two glass plates.

TFT Glass has as many TFTs as the number of pixels displayed, while a Color Filter Glass has color filter which generates color. Liquid crystals move according to the difference in voltage between the Color Filter Glass and the TFT Glass. The amount of light supplied by Back Light is determined by the amount of movement of the liquid crystals in such a way as to generate color.

Electronic Aspects of AMLCDs

The most common liquid-crystal displays (LCDs) in use today rely on picture elements, or pixels, formed by liquid-crystal (LC) cells that change the polarization direction of light passing through them in response to an electrical voltage.

As the polarization direction changes, more or less of the light is able to pass through a polarizing layer on the face of the display. Change the voltage, and the amount of light is changed.

There are two ways to produce a liquid-crystal image with such cells: the segment driving method and the matrix driving method.
The segment driving method displays characters and pictures with cells defined by patterned electrodes.

The matrix driving method displays characters and pictures in sets of dots.

Direct vs. multiplex driving of LCD TVs.

The segment drive method is used for simple displays, such as those in calculators, while the dot-matrix drive method is used for high-resolution displays, such as those in portable computers and TFT monitors.

Two types of drive method are used for matrix displays. In the static, or direct, drive method, each pixel is individually wired to a driver. This is a simple driving method, but, as the number of pixels is increased, the wiring becomes very complex. An alternative method is the multiplex drive method, in which the pixels are arranged and wired in a matrix format.

To drive the pixels of a dot-matrix LCD, a voltage can be applied at the intersections of specific vertical signal electrodes and specific horizontal scanning electrodes. This method involves driving several pixels at the same time by time-division in a pulse drive. Therefore, it is also called a multiplex, or dynamic, drive method.

Passive and Active Matrix LCDs

There are two types of dot-matrix LCDs.

Passive-matrix vs. active-matrix driving of LCD Monitors.

In passive-matrix LCDs (PMLCDs) there are no switching devices, and each pixel is addressed for more than one frame time. The effective voltage applied to the LC must average the signal voltage pulses over several frame times, which results in a slow response time of greater than 150 msec and a reduction of the maximum contrast ratio. The addressing of a PMLCD also produces a kind of crosstalk that produces blurred images because non-selected pixels are driven through a secondary signal-voltage path. In active-matrix LCDs (AMLCDs), on the other hand, a switching device and a storage capacitor are integrated at the each cross point of the electrodes.

The active addressing removes the multiplexing limitations by incorporating an active switching element. In contrast to passive-matrix LCDs, AMLCDs have no inherent limitation in the number of scan lines, and they present fewer cross-talk issues. There are many kinds of AMLCD. For their integrated switching devices most use transistors made of deposited thin films, which are therefore called thin-film transistors (TFTs).

The most common semiconducting layer is made of amorphous silicon (a-Si).
a-Si TFTs are amenable to large-area fabrication using glass substrates in a low-temperature (300°C to 400°C) process.

An alternative TFT technology, polycrystalline silicon - or polysilicon or p-Si-is costly to produce and especially difficult to fabricate when manufacturing large-area displays.

Nearly all TFT LCDs are made from a-Si because of the technology's economy and maturity, but the electron mobility of a p-Si TFT is one or two orders of magnitude greater than that of an a-Si TFT.

This makes the p-Si TFT a good candidate for an TFT array containing integrated drivers, which is likely to be an attractive choice for small, high definition displays such as view finders and projection displays.

Structure of Color TFT LCD TVs and LCD Monitors

A TFT LCD module consists of a TFT panel, driving-circuit unit, backlight system, and assembly unit.

The TFT-array substrate contains the TFTs, storage capacitors, pixel electrodes, and interconnect wiring. The color filter contains the black matrix and resin film containing three primary-color - red, green, and blue - dyes or pigments. The two glass substrates are assembled with a sealant, the gap between them is maintained by spacers, and LC material is injected into the gap between the substrates. Two sheets of polarizer film are attached to the outer faces of the sandwich formed by the glass substrates. A set of bonding pads are fabricated on each end of the gate and data-signal bus-lines to attach LCD Driver IC (LDI) chips

Driving Circuit Unit

Driving an a-Si TFT LCD requires a driving circuit unit consisting of a set of LCD driving IC (LDI) chips and printed-circuit-boards (PCBs).

To reduce the footprint of the LCD module, the drive circuit unit can be placed on the backside of the LCD module by using bent Tape Carrier Packages (TCPs) and a tapered light-guide panel (LGP).

How TFT LCD Pixels Work

A TFT LCD panel contains a specific number of unit pixels often called subpixels.
Each unit pixel has a TFT, a pixel electrode (IT0), and a storage capacitor (Cs).
For example, an SVGA color TFT LCD panel has total of 800x3x600, or 1,440,000, unit pixels.
Each unit pixel is connected to one of the gate bus-lines and one of the data bus-lines in a 3mxn matrix format. The matrix is 2400x600 for SVGA.

Because each unit pixel is connected through the matrix, each is individually addressable from the bonding pads at the ends of the rows and columns.
The performance of the TFT LCD is related to the design parameters of the unit pixel, i.e., the channel width W and the channel length L of the TFT, the overlap between TFT electrodes, the sizes of the storage capacitor and pixel electrode, and the space between these elements.
The design parameters associated with the black matrix, the bus-lines, and the routing of the bus lines also set very important performance limits on the LCD.

In a TFT LCD's unit pixel, the liquid crystal layer on the ITO pixel electrode forms a capacitor whose counter electrode is the common electrode on the color-filter substrate.

A storage capacitor (Cs) and liquid-crystal capacitor (CLC) are connected as a load on the TFT.
Applying a positive pulse of about 20V peak-to-peak to a gate electrode through a gate bus-line turns the TFT on. Clc and Cs are charged and the voltage level on the pixel electrode rises to the signal voltage level (+8 V) applied to the data bus-line.

The voltage on the pixel electrode is subjected to a level shift of DV resulting from a parasitic capacitance between the gate and drain electrodes when the gate voltage turns from the ON to OFF state. After the level shift, this charged state can be maintained as the gate voltage goes to -5 V, at which time the TFT turns off. The main function of the Cs is to maintain the voltage on the pixel electrode until the next signal voltage is applied.

Liquid crystal must be driven with an alternating current to prevent any deterioration of image quality resulting from dc stress.
This is usually implemented with a frame-reversal drive method, in which the voltage applied to each pixel varies from frame to frame. If the LC voltage changes unevenly between frames, the result would be a 30-Hz flicker.
(One frame period is normally 1/60 of a second.) Other drive methods are available that prevent this flicker problem.

Polarity-inversion driving methods.

In an active-matrix panel, the gate and source electrodes are used on a shared basis, but each unit pixel is individually addressable by selecting the appropriate two contact pads at the ends of the rows and columns.

Active addressing of a 3x3 matrix

By scanning the gate bus-lines sequentially, and by applying signal voltages to all source bus-lines in a specified sequence, we can address all pixels. One result of all this is that the addressing of an AMLCD is done line by line.

Virtually all AMLCDs are designed to produce gray levels - intermediate brightness levels between the brightest white and the darkest black a unit pixel can generate. There can be either a discrete numbers of levels - such as 8, 16, 64, or 256 - or a continuous gradation of levels, depending on the LDI.

The optical transmittance of a TN-mode LC changes continuously as a function of the applied voltage.
An analog LDI is capable of producing a continuous voltage signal so that a continuous range of gray levels can be displayed.
The digital LDI produces discrete voltage amplitudes, which permits on a discrete numbers of shades to be displayed. The number of gray levels is determined by the number of data bits produced by the digital driver.

Generating Colors

The color filter of a TFT LCD TV consists of three primary colors - red (R), green (G), and blue (B) - which are included on the color-filter substrate.

The elements of this color filter line up one-to-one with the unit pixels on the TFT-array substrate.
Each pixel in a color LCD is subdivided into three subpixels, where one set of RGB subpixels is equal to one pixel.
(Each subpixel consists of what we've been calling a unit pixel up to this point.)

Because the subpixels are too small to distinguish independently, the RGB elements appear to the human eye as a mixture of the three colors.
Any color, with some qualifications, can be produced by mixing these three primary colors.

The total number of display colors using an n-bit LDI is given by 23n, because each subpixel can generate 2n different transmittance levels.

The Nokia E71 is a smartphone from the Eseries range, a Series 60 3rd Edition, second generation Feature Pack 1, device with a QWERTY keyboard targeting business users worldwide. The Nokia E71 succeeded the Nokia E61/61i models, building on the base design and form factor but enhancing on the feature set. The silver/white variant of the E71 also makes an appearance in the "Superwoman" music video by Alicia Keys.

Chinese E71 (RM-493) Differences

The current E71 being sold in mainland China does not have WiFi 802.11b/g WLAN networking, 3G, or a front mounted camera. There is no reduction in price for phones lacking these features, and you can not get these features back with a firmware update, because the hardware is not there.^[7] The E71 phones sold in Macau and Hong Kong are not lacking these features. The software bundled with the Chinese version is slightly different, as it also has a QQ client, along with some other Chinese specific programs.

Nokia's aeon "full surface screen" cellphone concept

Nokia's research and development team have kicked it up a gear with an attractive "aeon" concept phone showing up in the R&D section of the company's website. The most prominent design feature of aeon is a touchscreen that stretches over the full surface area of the phone, similar to BenQ-Siemens's Black box concept phone we saw recently. Currently mobile technology isn't quite up to realizing this fantasy, but we'll sleep better tonight knowing that at least one of the cellphone industry's biggest names shares the same dream as we do -- BenQ's dream didn't count, unfortunately.

The Nokia 5800 is a portable entertainment device by Nokia.

The Nokia 5800, code-named "Tube," is a Symbian S60 smartphone. It is an XpressMusic series phone, which emphasizes music and multimedia playback. While it has tactile feedback, it doesn't use Nokia's upcoming Haptikos technology.

It has a compatibility mode for Java applications that aren't touchscreen-aware. It works by using part of the screen for displaying the essential buttons required by the program.

A prototype of this handset was seen in the 2008 Batman movie, The Dark Knight, as well as the #1 hits "Womanizer" by Britney Spears and Flo Rida's "Right Round".The handset was also seen in The Pussycat Dolls' "Jai Ho!" and Christina Aguilera's "Keeps Gettin' Better" music videos.

The phone has received generally positive reviews, with UK phone magazine Mobile Choice awarding it a full 5 stars in its Feb 8th issue.

On January 23rd 2009, Nokia announced it had shipped the millionth 5800 XpressMusic device, even though it still had not been fully released worldwide.

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic

The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is not the first touchscreen device in Nokia's range. In 2004, the Nokia 7700 was announced, a Symbian Series 90 device that was cancelled before it reached the market. This was followed by the Nokia 7710 which was an upgraded version of the 7700, which became available during 2005. Nokia also produced the UIQ-based Nokia 6708 phone in 2005, but this was not an in-house development and was bought in from Taiwansese manufacturer BenQ. Nokia have also produced a range of Maemo-based Internet Tablets which have a touchscreen interface, however these are not mobile phones. The 5800 is, however, Nokia's first Symbian S60 touchscreen device.

The 2007 launch of the rival Apple iPhone demonstrated that at the time, Nokia did not only not have any current touchscreen mobile phones, but since the cancellation of the Symbian Series 90 operating system, it also lacked any sort of suitable platform for developing such a device. Although Nokia asserted with some justification that the Nokia N95 was a comparable or better device, most other manufacturers responded with their own touchscreen devices.

The launch of the 5800 XpressMusic in October 2008 was followed-up with the announcement of the Nokia N97 in December 2008, followed by the Series 40 based Nokia 6208c in January 2009.

Nokia N91

The Nokia N91 is a mobile phone that was released to the public in April of 2006. It is part of the Nokia Nseries range of mobile phone. It features a 2-megapixel camera and a 4GB (8GB in the "new" 2006 version) hard disk to store approximately 3,000 songs encoded in either AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, MP3, mp3PRO, WAV, MIDI, or Microsoft's WMA format. It also features 3G and wi-fi technology. The phone features a 176 x 208, 262,144 colours TFT LCD display and dedicated music functionality buttons (XpressMusic) that slide down to reveal traditional mobile phone keys. Battery life when solely playing music has been estimated at 12 hours.

The phone features a new version of the Symbian Series 60 Operating System. It was the first phone with this version (Symbian version 9.1, Series 60 version 3.0). The new version is needed for the support of a mechanical hard disk. In the past, the version of the Symbian operating system has been a good indicator of CPU speed.

In the adverts for the phone it was stated that because of its 3.5 mm plug input, Nokia recommends quality headphones made from Bose and Sennheiser.

N91 also comes standard with a full Web browser

There have been a few problems with the N91, namely connecting the phone to an Apple Computer Mac OS X compatible computer. This will often cause the phone to crash as the two units are disconnected and music files are often not recognised despite being loaded into the phone's hard drive. Also, in old firmware versions, when you install a new theme, it will reset itself back to the default theme. Users can update the firmware using Nokia's PC Suite.

In the Philippines, there was an incident involving an N91 being used with one of Nokia's 46 million recalled BL-5C lithium-ion batteries^[1], and exploded as a result.

Nokia N96 is the latestNokia smartphone in the Nseries range of products. It is the official successor to Nokia N95.

The handset was publicly announced at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, February 2008, and started shipping in September 2008. Europe, Middle East and Asia-Pacific are the first locations to provide the handset for consumers. The American and Chinese versions were expected shortly thereafter.The general UK release date for the N96 was October 1, although London had a separate date of September 24 when the device went on sale exclusively at Nokia's flagship stores on Regent Street and at Terminal 5.

Copy-and-paste ability to be added to iPhone

Peer-to-peer connectivity for gaming will also be part of 3.0 software

At long last, Apple will be adding copy-and-paste for text to its iPhone, something customers have clamored for, and something that is commonly featured on almost all other smartphones.

Scott Forstall, Apple's senior vice president of iPhone software, unveiled the new feature today along with others for the phone at the company's headquarters in Cupertino, Calif.

"We've been working really hard to design an easy-to use interface for this on our touchscreen display," he said.

The new features of what is called iPhone 3.0 Operating System software will be available this summer, probably when a new version of the device itself is released. The software upgrade will be free to iPhone owners, and cost $9.95 for those who own the iPod touch, which does not have a phone, and uses wireless networks to connect to the Internet.

The ability to cut, copy and paste text will be available for e-mails, Web pages and other programs on the device, as will another key feature: the ability to send photos — but not videos — using text messaging. Photos can now be sent by e-mail using the iPhone, but not text messaging, or MMS, as it is called.

Users will be able to view e-mails and documents in "landscape," or horizontal, mode, as well as portrait mode with the new software, and will also be able to search contacts and e-mails much as they would on a computer.

Some of the programs announced yesterday, including MMS, will not work on first-generation iPhones, those released in 2007, and only with the second-generation iPhone 3G, which came out last July, because of the phones' different hardware.

"The new iPhone OS 3.0 is a major software release packed with incredible new features and innovations for iPhone customers and developers alike," said Phil Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide product marketing in a statement. "It will keep us years ahead of the competition."

The iPhone 3G has a GPS chip which has been used for providing location-based services and for mapping, but no programs with voice-based, turn-by-turn directions have been available. That should change with the new software upgrade, Forstall said.

Apple is broadening the ways that third-party software programmers can sell content on the iPhone.

The company says software developers now will be able to create applications that have items for sale within them, such as electronic books, subscriptions to magazines or newspapers or additional levels of a video game.

In addition, peer-to-peer connectivity, allowing gamers to wirelessly find other gamers using an iPhone or iPod touch will be among the new features of iPhone 3.0 software. Connections will be made using Bluetooth, a short-range wireless technology, instead of Wi-Fi.

Examples of two games, "Touch Pet" and "LiveFire" were shown, with "push" notification being available to connect with other players.

Another new feature will allow streaming of ESPN video using a new media player that automatically adjusts the video's quality based on the "bandwidth," or connection a user has.

While the changes announced are welcomed by iPhone users, "Apple delivered no 'knock-out' blows to competitors with this release," said Avi Greengart, Current Analysis research direction for consumer devices.

"It’s hard to get too excited about cut-and-paste — a feature that should have been there in the first place," he said. "Indeed, many of the features announced today are just catching up with what Windows Mobile, Symbian, and RIM (BlackBerry) phones have provided for years."

However, he added, "Lost in all the features checklists is the impact that this release is likely to have on application development — and here is where iPhone 3.0 really does keep Apple in the forefront. Consumers are increasingly looking at smartphones as a platform investment that increases in value over time as applications are added."

Another analyst, Kevin Burden, director of mobile devices research, said that "Even though the iPhone reset the bar for every other mobile phone manufacturer, this version of its OS shows just how much catch-up Apple itself needed to do.

"Cut-and-paste and MMS messaging have been expected functionality — and not just on high-end phones, either."

Apple also said at the announcement that it sold 13.7 million iPhones in 2008, exceeding its goal of 10 million, and that from June, 2007 to December, 2008, a total of 17 million iPhones were sold.

New iPhone software unveiled

Apple has given a preview of new software for its iPhone which will offer users more than 100 extra features.

Owners of iPhone and iPod Touch devices will be able to cut, copy and paste information for the first time when the third version of the operating software becomes available this summer.

They will also be able to search their files and applications just by typing a key word or phrase into a box on the home screen, set parental controls on access to TV shows and movies, and automatically log in at WiFi hot spots.

Picture messaging has also been added, as well as the ability to record "voice memos" while users are out and about.

The iPhone - a combined iPod, mobile phone and internet browser - already features a high-speed internet connection and GPS satellite positioning.

But users will soon be able to follow "turn by turn" routes through Google maps - effectively turning their devices into sat navs - through a software tool allowing developers to create the function.

Apple has released the maps tool in a limited launch of the software to the industry, so that engineers can create new applications for the devices.

Developers will also be able to offer subscription content and sell new material and features in a "simple and secure" process, Apple said.

Philip Schiller, senior vice president of Apple's worldwide product marketing, said the "major" software release would benefit both iPhone customers and developers.

The software will be free to iPhone owners, but will cost iPod Touch owners 9.95 dollars (around £7) to download. UK prices will be announced in the future.

Pakistan's status as an international sporting venue has come under doubt after masked terrorists attacked the team bus carrying Sri Lanka's cricketers to the Gaddafi stadium in Lahore on Tuesday morning. Five cricketers, including Mahela Jayawardene, the captain, and Kumar Sangakkara, his deputy, received minor injuries. Ajantha Mendis, Thilan Samaraweera and Tharanga Paravitarana were also injured in the attack which killed six security men and two civilians.
The Lahore Test was quickly called off and the tour cancelled, with the Sri Lankan players evacuated from the Gaddafi stadium and taken to a nearby airbase. The squad, including Samaraweera and Paranavitana, whose injuries were more serious, flew out in a chartered plane around 10pm Tuesday and landed in Colombo early on Wednesday. Samaraweera and Paranavithana went by ambulance to a private hospital in the city, a senior official told AFP.
There have been terror strikes on the sidelines of cricket, but this is the first time players have been directly targeted. The attack is the first major strike against an international sporting team since Palestinian militants attacked Israeli athletes at the 1972 Munich Olympics.
In its first official reaction, the PCB said the attack was "beyond the control of the management". Opposition MPs said in the Guardian Pakistan government officials received specific warnings from local police that militants were aiming to ambush the Sri Lankan squad.
The paper reported a letter dated January 22 that said an attack was planned on the team, either at their hotel or between the hotel and the sports stadium. However, a change of government in the Punjab province meant a meeting about the threat was not followed up.
"Intelligence reports said there might be an attack on the cricket team," Pervez Rashid, a senior member of the sacked Punjab government, said. "They made no appropriate security arrangements."
Security concerns in Pakistan
September 2001- New Zealand decide not to tour Pakistan following the September 11 attacks. West Indies and Australia then decide to move their games in Pakistan scheduled for later in the year to neutral venues in Colombo and Sharjah.
May 2002 - New Zealand cancel their tour of Pakistan after a bomb blast outside Karachi's Sheraton Hotel where they were staying.
March 2008 - Australia postpone their tour of Pakistan slated for the end of March as a result of security concerns.The decision was taken in the aftermath of Benazir Bhutto's assasination in December 2007.
August 2008 - Citing security concerns, five out of eight member nations of the ICC choose not to send their teams to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy scheduled for September the same year. As a result, the tournament is postponed until October 2009.
October 2008 - West Indies call off a proposed tour of Pakistan scheduled for November citing security concerns, a week after the West Indies Women had cancelled the Pakistan leg of their Asian tour.
December 2008 - The BCCI call off India's scheduled tour of Pakistan in 2009 following a directive from the government.
December 2008 - The PCB confirm that Sri Lanka will tour Pakistan after India decided not to after the Mumbai terror attack.
February 2009 - The ICC decide not to stage the 2009 Champions Trophy in Pakistan after some of the members expressed reservations about touring the country.
The PCB's statement is unlikely to cut much ice with other cricket bodies. David Morgan, the president of the ICC, described Pakistan as "a very dangerous place" at present. Speaking about the World Cup, he said: "Things will have to change dramatically in Pakistan in my opinion if any of the games are to be staged there. I think that international cricket in Pakistan is out of the question until there is a very significant change, a regime change I guess."
The Sri Lanka cricketers were on their way to the Gaddafi stadium when their bus was attacked by 12 armed terrorists near Liberty market, Habibur Rehman, chief commissioner of police, said. A grenade was also thrown at the bus but it missed.
"The bus came under attack as we were driving to the stadium, the gunmen targeted the wheels of the bus first and then the bus," Mahela Jayawardene said. "We all dived to the floor to take cover. About five players have been injured and also Paul Farbrace [a member of the support staff]…"
Describing the injuries, Sangakkara told CNN-IBN: "Thilan [Samaraweera] has a shrapnel wound in his leg, but he is fine. [Tharanga] Paranavitana had shrapnel in his chest, but thank God it wasn't very deep and just on the surface.
"I had shrapnel injuries in my shoulder, but they have all been removed and I'm okay now. Ajantha [Mendis] had shrapnel in his neck and scalp, but he too has had medical attention and is fine. Everyone else is perfectly all right."
The reserve umpire Ahsan Raza was also injured in the attack. Nadeem Ghauri, the TV umpire, who was travelling in a bus behind the Sri Lanka team coach said the firing continued for some time. Umpire Steve Davis, who was on the team bus, called the terrorist attack "terrible". "I'm lost for words," he said.
Speaking on Geo TV, Inzamam-ul-Haq, the former Pakistan captain, said: "This is the first time that a cricket team has been seriously targeted... Pakistan's image will be hit and only time will tell how much damage has been done to Pakistan cricket. The World Cup too might be affected... no country would want to come now to Pakistan... I am worried where Pakistan will get a chance to play, not only in Pakistan but outside as well. This is all so sad."
In Napier, the New Zealand and Indian teams donned black arm bands midway through their one-day cricket match as a mark of respect for the Sri Lankan cricketers.
The Indian cricket board, which had called off a scheduled tour of Pakistan last December, expressed its sorrow over the attack. "We pray for the speedy recovery of the injured cricketers, and sympathise with their families and compatriots," BCCI Secretary N Srinivasan said in New Delhi.
Intikhab Alam, the Pakistan coach, said his team escaped the attack because "the Sri Lankan team left [the hotel] five minutes before us".
The Sri Lankan team only stepped in after the Indian government had barred the Indian team from touring Pakistan after the terror attack in Mumbai.
